Im Fachbereich II (Mathematik, Physik, Chemie) ist im Rahmen des Drittmittelprojektes „PROVIS“ ab dem 01.04.2026 für die Dauer von vier Jahren folgende Stelle zu besetzen:
Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in zur Promotion (m/w/d)
Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen mit 100 % der regelmäßigen Arbeitszeit
Im Rahmen eines von Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt geförderten Projekts zu „Prognosen und Analytik für die Veraltung der innovativen Steuerung“ (PROVIS) wird exemplarisch in drei Handlungsfeldern der Berliner Verwaltung erforscht, wie mathematisch-statistische Methoden, Methoden des maschinellen Lernens bis hin zur Künstlichen Intelligenz (KI) im Verwaltungshandeln nutzenbringend eingesetzt werden können. Hierzu werden Methoden der Zeitreihenanalyse, des maschinellen Lernens und des Predictive Analytics weiterentwickelt und implementiert.
Das Forschungsvorhaben weist somit fachliche Schwerpunkte sowohl im Bereich der angewandten Mathematik, der Wirtschaftsinformatik, der Data Science als auch in der Organisationsentwicklung zur Digitalisierung der öffentlichen Verwaltung und des Verwaltungshandelns auf.
Angestrebtes Ziel ist, dass die Forschungsarbeiten der Mitarbeiterin/des Mitarbeiters zur Promotion führen. Die Promotion findet in enger Kooperation mit der Freien Universität Berlin als akademischer Partner statt.
Voraussetzung für die Einstellung ist die entsprechende Betreuungszusage für das Promotionsvorhaben.
Aufgabengebiet
- Datenanalyse von Kundendaten
- Mathematische Modellbildung und Modellvalidierung
- Weiterentwicklung von Prognoseverfahren (Zeitreihen, neuronale Netze, hybride Verfahren) zum Schätzen der Kennzahlen in verschiedenen Kundensegmenten
- Implementierung, Anwendung und Bewertung der entwickelten Verfahren
- Wissenschaftliche Dokumentation und Veröffentlichung der Ergebnisse
Fachliche Anforderungen
- Abgeschlossenes wissenschaftliches Hochschulstudium (Masterstudium, Diplom) in der Fachrichtung Angewandte Mathematik oder Wirtschaftsmathematik oder Wirtschaftsinformatik oder Data Science oder Informatik (Vorlage des Abschlusses spätestens zum Zeitpunkt der Unterschrift des Arbeitsvertrages)
- Fundierte theoretische und praktische Erfahrungen in angewandter Statistik, Zeitreihenanalyse und Datenauswertung
- Erfahrungen in Modellen und Methoden des maschinellen Lernens
- Fundierte Programmierkenntnisse in Python bzw. R
- Sehr gutes mündliches und schriftliches Formulierungsvermögen in Deutsch

Your experience
Throughout their careers, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to conduct and guide scientific research, to provide related higher education, to follow advances in their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field. We seek applicants who have:
- A doctorate in operations research or a closely related field, e.g., (applied) mathematics, computer science or management science.
- Potential to carry out outstanding research, attract research funding, and provide researcher training in operations research.
- Interest in collaborating in an interdisciplinary environment.
- Ability to become an excellent teacher in the BSc major on Mathematics and Systems Analysis and the MSc degree programme on Mathematics and Operations Research of the School of Science.
Applicants to this call are considered only for Assistant Professor positions. They will be evaluated based on their potential and demonstrated ability in research, teaching, academic service, and activities in the scientific community.
The selected applicant must have completed their doctoral degree before starting the position. Researchers with more than twelve years since their doctoral degree (not including relevant career breaks) are advised to seek more advanced positions. Professors in the Aalto tenure track system must be fluent in English to carry out their duties successfully. Finnish language skills are not required.

About the Role
- Design, test, and enhance optimization models and metaheuristic algorithms for our network planning use-cases
- Prepare and analyze data to inform model design and evaluate algorithm results, ensuring validity and practical relevance
- Develop and implement these algorithms in clean, readable, efficient, and production-ready code, actively contributing to code reviews
- Balance algorithm complexity with practical implementation, progressing incrementally using an agile inspect-and-adapt approach

About You
- An academic background in a quantitative field such as Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related disciplines
- At least 2 years of practical experience implementing optimization models or metaheuristic algorithms, using Python
- A deep understanding of operations research models and algorithms, including combinatorial optimization (MILP, LP, etc) and metaheuristics (local search, genetic algorithms, etc)
- A strong team player valuing close collaboration, shared responsibilities, and iterative development
- Proficiency in conveying complex algorithmic concepts to non-technical stakeholders
- Fluent in English, with strong communication skills in both written and spoken forms
- Experience with SQL, a solid grasp of OOP principles, and a commitment to clean code are all highly valued
- Experience in the transportation and logistics domain is advantageous
